Hobart for Kids (and mum and dad too)
With so many fantastic things to do with kids, Hobart is one of the most family-friendly cities in Australia.
While Hobart is renowned for its food and drink scene, there is so much more to do than eating at restaurants with kids.
From hiking up Mount Wellington to going on ghost tours, here are the best things to do in Hobart with kids.
Go on a Port Arthur Ghost Tour
If your kids love Halloween or spooky stories, then they will love joining the ghost tour of Port Arthur Historic Site’s buildings and ruins.
The guided, lantern-lit tour lasts 90 minutes, and each minute is filled with stories of unexplained events and things that have happened that have terrified convicts, settlers, soldiers and visitors.
The tours operate on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. A family ticket is $75 and must be pre-booked online.
Alternatively, take a daylight tour of the Site. The new Visitors Centre offers interactive and audiovisual displays for the whole family
Get up Close with Tasmanian Devils
You can’t take a trip to Tasmania with the kids without seeing a Tasmanian devil.
There are two ways you can get up close and personal with a Tasmanian devil, depending on how close the kids really want to get.
At Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, 30 minutes north of Hobart, you can wander and see the Tasmanian devils at your own pace or book in for one of its daily 45-minute tours.
My all-time favourite Australian animal is the Wombat. Although quite shy, you may see one at Bonorong too.
However, another great way to see these beautiful critters is at Tasmanian Devil Unzoo. Located just over an hour east of Hobart, this is the place where the Tasmanian devils run wild. One of the best things to do here is The Devil Tracker Adventure, a guided 4WD tour to see how the animals are tracked and monitored.
No matter how you interact with the animals, seeing Tasmanian devils in Hobart is one of the best things to do with kids.
Visit the Pooseum
If you’re up for laughing with the kids, you have to take them to the Pooseum, a museum dedicated to animal droppings.
Offering more than 50 informational panels and 40 videos, kids will love everything about this interactive museum. From the PooTube videos to the farting machine, both parents and adults will be in stitches, laughing and learning about how different animals poo.
Who knew there are plates made with poo, and even Gin?
Located in the historic village of Richmond, the Pooseum is a 25-minute drive from Hobart, and it costs $16 for an adult and $10 for a child to enter.
Pick Berries at Coal River Farm
If you visit Hobart from October to April, one of the best things to do with the kids is to pick berries at Coal River Farm.
During these months, you and the kids can pick some of Tasmania’s most juicy strawberries, peaches, plums and more.
If you’ve missed the berry-picking season, don’t worry! You can still see chocolate being blended and cheese being made. Try the delectable chocolate and cheese in the cafe and let the kids interact with the resident farm animals.
Mount Wellington Walks
Sitting tall above the city, when in Hobart, a walk on Mount Wellington is a must.
There are plenty of family-friendly walking trails to choose from, including the one-hour Organ Pipes Track.
If you and the kids are up for a challenge, embark on the Myrtle Gully Track to discover beautiful waterfalls and towering eucalypt trees.
Boasting stunning views from the summit, Mount Wellington can’t be missed when holidaying in Hobart.
Get Lost in a Maze
Located 30 minutes from the centre of Hobart, Richmond is a historic village home to Australia’s oldest bridge, an old convict gaol, a lolly shop and a fun maze.
Richmond Maze is a fun activity for the whole family, making it one of the best things to do in Hobart with kids. Consisting of two different mazes, one easy and one challenging, the entire family will have fun at Richmond Maze.
The different things to see at the centre of both mazes make the race to the middle all the more exciting.
From spooky ghost tours to museums dedicated to animal poo, there are so many fun and interactive things to do in Hobart with kids.
Whether your family loves puzzle solving, hiking or animals, there is something for everyone to enjoy in Hobart.
